so, again, just to reiterate, i think we have a couple of big questions in front of us. and the numbers that i'm putting out here are not the end of the story as i'm sure every department in this room would tell you they are not adequate to meet the needs that we would prefer to -- the staffing needs that he would prefer to have to deal with this population. you mentioned in your comments up front that in the worst case scenario, if the sheriff's department thinks is a possibility, if this is a much larger impact than the numbers and projections the state have given us, we could end up with a significantly higher jail population. if we do end up bumping up against our capacity, we could be talking about millions and tens of millions -- or $10 million more than this. we also have other needs that are related to this population but that are also a baseline under funding for some of of our criminal justice agencies i think we would all prefer to see if the resources were available to have better staffing ratios for the current population and this new population. but that's

and the big weather story is a warm up if you roll into the bay area weekend. so i mentioned this last week when it rained, i'm just glad it didn't rain this weekend. we got a little rain tuesday, it's great it's over the weekend. this weekend looks like it's going to be the nicest week epd weekend we've seen in a while. we saw a little bit of it today. we're looking for temperatures tomorrow to be warmer. temperatures on saturday and sunday are warmer still. right now the hottest day will probably be sunday with temperatures moving toward 70 degrees. we had the rain, that's good. it's going to heat up it's going to dry up but i have to tell you that rain helps quite a bit as you go into this holiday weekend which is traditionally a very scary fire weekend. fourth of july is really hot, but we're wet right now so that helps out. much better than we would have been without that inch of rain. fore what's for the fog is at the coast. like i said it peels back and look that the, big strong winds are going to sheer it right off the coast and you have a nice day out

the big one was what kind of a book was that i was trying to write? i finally saw the distinction as one between telling a story or describing, explaining and judging. a lot of history in fall describing, explaining and judging of large and complicated things but the things that drew me to history originally and to writing in general was the compelling nature of stories which would take hold of you. you couldn't let them go. i decided that was one wanted to do. the incredible task of interesting characters here many of whom were visible and there were dramatic events taking place. the killing of crazy horse which took place in 1877 in some ways was a minor event but on the other hand it was devastating in its psychological effects on the indians and other indians as well and that is still the case. most americans get through years at a time without thinking of the killing of crazy horse but that is not true. they resent it and they are still -- there are still factions in the tribe that are glad of it. they did what they could to ensure that crazy hor
